We are searching for a Senior Director, Commercial Supply Chain that will help lead the company into its next stage toward commercialization of its products around the world. This role will oversee all aspects of commercial launch supply to ensure reliable, compliant, cost effective and on-time supply of product and will report to the Senior Vice President, Technical Operations and work out of our brand new state-of-the-art corporate center in San Carlos, CA.

The Senior Director, Commercial Supply Chain is responsible for the development and implementation of strategies for the global end-to-end supply chain for commercial and Phase III clinical products. This role will partner closely with senior leadership to implement current good practices in materials management, contract manufacturing, procurement and supply chain and logistics capabilities as the Company executes on the global product commercialization plans.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Develop and effectively communicate Supply Chain vision, strategic direction and resource requirements sufficient to deliver robust global supply solutions / channels
  • Establish, oversee and manage the Supply Chain Group to communicate both internally and externally Master Production Schedules for drug product relevant to domestic and international markets. This includes a Master Production Forecast / Plan for all products
  • Oversee Forecast planning and inventory management of all drug products in the pipeline, both internal and acquired through commercial agreements. In addition, provide Forecast planning and inventory control of all active pharmaceutical ingredients, intermediates and finished products
  • Establish key Supply Chain interfaces with Pharmaceutical Development / Chemistry Manufacturing Control (CMC), Quality Assurance, Regulatory Compliance, Sales & Marketing and Financial Planning and Analysis that inventory demands, Forecasts align at both the operational and revenue levels
  • Develop and manage annual Operating Budgets for responsible Cost Center(s) and assure maximum functional area output with minimum cost and resource burden
  • Support and encourage communication to all internal departments regarding logistics and scheduling; actively build and maintain relationships within and across functions
  • Partner and collaborate with other senior management to achieve and continually maintain maximum operational efficiency, interdepartmental coordination and initiative / projects prioritization
  • Initiate and participate in strategy discussions (at departmental, global and partner levels) to ensure that decisions align with agreed upon business direction and processes
  • Serve as the lead / Subject Matter Expert for supply and distribution on Commercial Launch teams and other forums as appropriate and assigned
  • Initiate and coordinate quality improvements, operational excellence techniques, business process design, budget analyses and cost reduction processes / programs to ensure that the most effective ‘best practices’ are in place
  • Oversee product purchasing and planning at contract manufacturing and logistic suppliers. Includes establishment and oversight of rolling forecasts for commercial products
  • Working with suppliers, able to identify and qualify shipping routes for the pharmaceutical products
  • Develop and prepare long and short-range Supply Plans; negotiate, create, review and oversee Supply Agreements and Contracts with vendors and partners; establish and implement inventory policy and materials risk mitigation strategies
  • Coordinate the execute purchase orders for commercial Application Programming Interface (API) and finished products as approved and agreed
  • Ensure that Supply Chain complies with all supply and distribution corporate policies and that all Company products abide to lawful and accepted practices of supply and distribution, both for import and export of investigational and commercial pharmaceutical products
  • Implement and direct the Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process and transition the Supply Chain organization to a fully commercial compliant level of performance and excellence in inventory flow and product distribution
  • Prepare management reports, metrics, presentations and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure and communicate functional area performance


  • Bachelor’s degree in Science / Business / Management and 15+ years biotechnology / Pharmaceutical / Supply chain experience
  • Strategic, in-depth understanding of Supply / Production Planning; Procurement; Materials Management; Materials Handling / Logistics; Warehousing / Storage; Distribution; Enterprise Resource Planning / Business Systems; Validated Systems; and Data Management
  • Ability to comprehend high-level business strategy objectives and effectively develop / execute ‘roadmaps’, milestones, detailed implementation plans and KPI’s
  • Demonstrates ability to create and manage work plans and timelines, able to effectively handle multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment, time management skills
  • Ability to work well on cross-functional basis internally and with business partners in a positive, collaborative manner. Ability to collaborate and communicate with all Company functional areas
  • Comprehensive understanding and expertise of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Distribution Practice (GDP) and other regulatory requirements to establish compliant commercial stage supply chain operations and contribute towards product development / licensure activities
  • Experience with drug substance / drug product shipping qualification / validation (cold-chain and ambient), including drug product packaging for domestic and international shipments, materials tracking and multi-national distribution
  • Ability to address diverse technical challenges with a hands-on approach, in areas including packaging, inventory management, warehousing, distribution and product returns / product destruction, previous management of contract manufacturing / contract testing organizations and Third Party Logistics (3PLs) providers
  • Demonstrates success having built a supply chain function in support of a fast growing company and working knowledge in the development of strategies and implementation of serialization of drug product from drug product manufacturers through 3PLs and beyond
  • Demonstrates financial acumen with ability to perform detailed cost analyses, manage budgets, perform make vs. buy scenarios and identify areas for cost reductions
  • Ability to travel to vendor / partner sites globally and attend meetings, seminars and training sessions as required
  • Communication (written / verbal), presentation and organization skills, ability to self-motivate and function independently
  • Demonstrated success installing and realizing new capabilities and infrastructure in support of the Company’s first product launch and overall commercialization efforts
  • Successful new product introduction / launch experience
  • Executive level supplier relationship management experience, supervisory / managerial leadership experience of senior-level supply chain professionals, technical contractors and expert consultants
  • Commercial supply chain operations / practices experience and demonstrate exceptional attention to detail and ability to succeed in a fast paced environment
  • Working knowledge on current and upcoming regulations associated with serialization of pharmaceutical products
  • Completion of formal training courses and seminars in executive leadership, supply chain management, finance, information data management / technology, business development, Operational Excellence and project management

Preferred Experience

  • Master’s degree and / or equivalent experience and education in strategic leadership and business, Association for Supply Chain Management (APICS) Certification, Class ‘A’ Business Excellence training
  • Familiarity with manufacturing operations and processes including API (drug substance), finished goods production and medical devices and cold chain logistics experience
  • Identify, recruit, develop and retain reporting managerial staff. Initiate methods to encourage effective leadership, decision-making, collaboration and innovation
  • Enable subordinate managers to effectively achieve the mission and stated objectives of their respective functional areas
  • Continually provide clarification, motivation, guidance, coaching and feedback regarding functional area performance to expectations and requirements
  • Recommend and utilize methods to reward teamwork and performance
  • Experience building, coaching and developing teams of supply chain professionals into the next supply chain leaders
  • Ability to recognize outstanding job performance and motivate others towards improved performance
  • Outstanding managerial and employee development skills, leadership, communication and business partnering ability; strategic thinking and experience building effective organization
